We are often bent under the weight of our decisions, but seldom do we pause to think of the distance of them. Confused? Let me explain... We make our decisions in one of two ways, either with our heads or with our hearts. Each area is distinct and unique in its characteristics. Logic, practicality, and reason are the motivating factors of a mind decision. A choice made from the heart is determined by faith, passion, intuition, and God's prompting. The natures of these two processes are far apart in similarity, yet the literal distance between the two is a mere 18 inches. 18 inches separates the head from the heart, a foot and a half determine life or death decisions. The space between Heaven and Hell is marked by only an 18 inch gap.
Logic proves to us that a high power, God, formed this world and reigns over it. In our minds we know that there is God who created us and Christ who saved us. A conscious mind decision allows us to grasp this concept. We can read scripture and comprehend the messages of love, hope, and kindness. We can live out these principles because our logical minds tell us that these ways are right, but the gap is bridged when we take the matter of our minds and accept it in our hearts. While my mind knows that God created me and Christ saved me, it is a far greater thing to determine to believe these ideas in my heart. The principles and morals of scripture are acknowledged as right in my mind, but it is an entirely different matter to have a heart wrenching conviction of them as the guidelines of my life.
18 inches is the distance from Heaven to Hell because in that space we have the opportunity to take the knowledge of salvation and transform it into the heart of one who is redeemed. It is not enough to accept in the recesses of our mind the sacrifice of Jesus. To make the trek from Heaven to Hell, to bridge the gap, you must take that knowledge and feel it, live it.
The very essence of life is not found in the operation of our minds but in the beating of our hearts. We live not because we have the profound ability to think, but because our heart pumps life's blood through us. In our very nature we can see the deep essential role our heart plays within us. Take your faith from the depths of your mind and live it in your heart. In that, and only in that will you remove the foot and a half gap that stands between Heaven and Hell, you and the Lord. A shame it would be to miss Heaven by a mere 18 inches.
It is my prayer that you will take the cross, tip it over, and bridge the gap from your head to your heart.
